    Superb

The set up of the rooms and the restaurant, in rock caves, is very well done (atmospheric, tasteful luxury in a unique setting). Very good restaurant (dinner and breakfast were excellent). The hotel is located in the "Sassi" area.

    Superb

The room was fabulous...a re-invented sassi dwelling with all appropriate modernity. I felt truly pampered!

Breakfast not great for healthy eaters...no muesli/proper yoghourt/local bread...no real fruit juice; just "jiuce drink"

    Good

Great feeling of the history of the Sassi in the bedrooms which are part cave structure

The room is very separate from the facilities so that you have to leave the bedroom in order to get to the breakfast room which means going outside into the public pathway. Similarly to get to Reception area. Can be noisy as the public are immediately outside your bedroom door.

    Superb

It was interesting to stay (partially) in a cave. The rooms are built into the cliffs. I liked the balcony of the room. The food itself was not spectacular but, in general, it was good.

Some services were lacking but these can be rectified. There was no information sheet (that is easy to do - write on the computer & print). For example, I was not told that there was a bar which had a library and that we would have a welcome drink. In terms of the dining room, they are trying - but sometimes service is slow (cold capucchino, being served the first course - e.g. pasta before choosing your wine). Again, these problems can easily be rectified. They are trying and do welcome feedback. I am a professor of management and they were grateful for the few suggestions I made.

    Fabulous

The location is great. The room was big and according to the town. Breakfast was delicious, with a lot of selections for everyone. Internet worked perfectly.

For the price I was expecting a bathtube, not just a shower.

    Exclusive

We loved our suite (number 44). The bed and pillows were very comfortable, everything was pristinely clean and well appointed. My favorite feature was the enormous sunken tub (note if you want a stand up shower, this would not be the room for you). We chose this hotel because of its unique design. Each room or suite will be unique, because they were cave dwellings. While there were man made extensions (such as the entry room in our suite), most of the suite looked to be updated original cave room excavations. If you want to stay in a one of a kind hotel, choose Sant Angelo. Do not let the origin as a cave scare you. It is a luxury hotel with all the modern conviences, just with a unique ambiance. We ate at the hotel restaurant the first night. The food was excellent. The two young men (Donato and Francesco) were wonderful and had great recommendations on local specialities. Everyone spoke enough English that there were no language barriers.

As stated in other reviews, if you have mobility issues (canes, walkers, etc.) this is not the place for you. Each cave room or suite has its own entrance which require some walking on uneven cobblestone paths and stairs. But then again, if you are in Matera to visit the Sassi, then you should be expecting to walk on uneven cobblestone paths.

Fantastic room, total luxury. Incredible location overlooking the gorge.

Charged us for a cappucino as part of breakfast - was rather stingy given the room cost.
